🧹 How to Care for Your Heels So They Last for Years

A good pair of heels is worth looking after. With basic care, most heels can last three to five years of regular use — longer if worn only on special occasions. Pakistan's climate — with its summer heat, monsoon humidity, and winter dust — creates specific challenges for shoe care that this guide addresses directly.

Cleaning Different Materials

Faux leather (rexine) — the most common material in Pakistani footwear:

Wipe with a slightly damp cloth after each wear to remove dust and surface marks. For scuffs, a small amount of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) rubbed in with a soft cloth and then buffed off can restore the sheen surprisingly well. Avoid soaking with water — it causes the material to peel at the seams over time.

Satin and fabric uppers:

Used on many embellished and wedding-occasion heels. Brush off dry dust with a soft dry brush. For small stains, use a slightly damp cloth and blot — never rub, as rubbing spreads the stain and damages the weave. A specialist fabric protector spray (available in most supermarkets) applied before wearing will repel most stains before they set.

Suede and nubuck:

Less common in Pakistan but increasingly available. Use a suede brush (a soft nail brush works in a pinch) to restore the nap after wearing. Keep away from water — rain is the enemy of suede. A suede protector spray applied before first wearing provides a degree of water resistance.

Patent leather and high-gloss finishes:

Wipe with a soft dry cloth — a chamois cloth or microfibre cloth works best. Buff in a circular motion to remove fingerprints and restore shine. Patent leather scratches relatively easily, so store in individual cloth bags when not in use.

Protecting the Heel Tip

The small rubber tip at the very bottom of a stiletto or kitten heel is one of the most important — and most neglected — parts of the shoe.

When this tip wears down to the metal pin underneath, two things happen: the metal pin scratches hard floors (and can get you refused entry to some venues), and the heel itself becomes much harder to walk in on any smooth surface. More importantly, once the metal is exposed, the damage worsens rapidly and becomes irreversible without a cobbler.

Check your heel tips every 3–4 months if you wear the shoes regularly. If they look worn down by more than halfway, get them replaced. Any cobbler in a Pakistani bazaar can replace heel tips for around Rs 100–200 per pair — this is one of the best-value shoe maintenance investments you can make.

For shoes you wear frequently, consider having new heel tips professionally applied before the originals wear out, rather than waiting.

Storage: The Biggest Factor in Longevity

How you store your shoes matters as much as how you clean them.

Never store shoes in plastic bags. Plastic traps moisture, which leads to mildew growth on the inside of the shoe and causes the outer material to crack over time. This is a particularly significant problem in Pakistan during and after the monsoon season.

Cloth bags are ideal. If your shoes came in cloth dust bags, use them. If not, a cotton pillowcase works. This allows the shoe to breathe while protecting it from dust.

Stuff heels when storing. Placing a ball of tissue paper or a shoe tree inside the shoe during storage maintains its shape. Heels stored empty develop creases in the upper that become permanent over time.

Store upright or on their side — never stacked. Stacking shoes crushes the heels and can warp the upper. Shoe racks where heels hang at the back or lie on their sides are the best storage method.

Climate control during monsoon: If you live in a humid area, placing a few silica gel packets (the small packets that come in new shoe boxes and electronics packaging) in your shoe storage area absorbs excess moisture and prevents mildew.

Quick Fixes for Common Problems

Loose embellishments: If a rhinestone or crystal falls off an embellished heel, use a small amount of strong clear craft glue (like super glue) to reattach it immediately. Waiting longer makes it harder to match where it came from.

Squeaky heels: Squeaking is usually caused by the inner sole separating slightly from the shoe's base. A thin application of super glue along the edge where the inner sole meets the shoe, held closed for a few minutes, usually resolves this permanently.

Slippery soles: New leather or smooth plastic soles can be dangerously slippery on tiled floors — common in Pakistani homes and offices. Score the sole gently with coarse sandpaper or a nail file before first wearing. This creates micro-texture that dramatically improves grip. A cobbler can also apply a non-slip rubber sole overlay for Rs 200–400 per pair.

Stretched straps: If a leather or rexine ankle strap has stretched and becomes loose, take the shoe to a cobbler to have a new hole punched at the correct position. Never try to punch your own hole — improper holes cause the strap to tear.
